Yang's Favourite Thing #4 - 78% Frey extra dark bittersweet chocolate
I forgot how my love for bitter, mildly sweet dark chocolate began. Probably, on some day when I was feeling depressed, I googled "ten ways to stay happy and healthy", which led me to read about the flavonoids like epicatechin found in dark chocolate, and how it helps release endorphins - hormones that bring about a feeling of euphoria and well-being.
As a girl, I used to love milk chocolate (I didn't know dark chocolate exists then). Fascinated with it from reading Roald Dahl's book - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I would try a different brand of milk chocolate each time I visit the 7-eleven store after school. When I was a young adult, I couldn't resist and bought a cute book - I Like Chocolate by Davide Cali from "Woods in the Books" bookstore, and thought I would read it to my children next time. Believe it, the book cover was my facebook profile picture for at least two years. The book is so so cute I need to share a few pages with you.
Back to the subject... note it's 78% Frey extra dark bittersweet chocolate. I do eat the 85% one at times but that's just overly bitter. You probably need an extra burst of endorphins to balance off that level of bitterness.
When I have it in my fridge, half a square goes into my almost-daily cup of Marigold low fat natural yoghurt with cut fruits. And then before I brush my teeth and go to bed, I would irresistibly pop the other half into my mouth. It gets re-stocked less frequently than Leibniz crunchy wholemeal biscuits but I do have a pack in my fridge now.
